Their outreach kicked-off last month in Santa Clarita as Natalie and Jeff presented to members of the High Desert Branch of the Southern California Chapter.  

“We showed the video, then explained what Congress consists of, why members should volunteer, and told about the many sponsorships available for individuals, private firms and government agencies,” said Jeff. 

Natalie added, “The audience responded with great interest in learning more about Congress and that is the kind of reception we like.  It’s our goal to reach every public works professional in Southern California and make sure they are aware of this tremendous opportunity.”

Jeff will be traveling again next week to tell the California League of Cities all about Congress 2012.  The Congress 2012 Committee will share information with other organizations interested in a presentation.  For details, contact Natalie Meeks at  714-765-4530, nmeeks@anaheim.net

But why?  If you’re like most people you’re wondering what the payoff for joining a committee would be.  So here are the TOP TEN reasons to join a committee. 

REASON 10:  The more the merrier.  The more volunteers we have, the lighter the workload for everyone.

 REASON 9:  You can help build interest and enthusiasm.  With your inside knowledge of the Congress, you can recruit friends and colleagues to volunteer or just attend.

 REASON 8:  It’s an opportunity to build APWA membership.  Whether it’s someone just building their career or a seasoned public works professional, the 2012 Congress is a great reason to get involved in APWA.

 REASON 7:  You can show off hidden talents.  Planning a Congress takes more than project management skills.  This is your chance to show off your talents in things like graphic design, event planning or fundraising.

 REASON 6:  Build your resume.  In these tough economic times you need to set yourself apart.  Not many people will have 2012 APWA International Public Works Congress & Exposition Planning Committee member on their resume.

 REASON 5:  You get to attend the Congress.  If you’re like most members the Congress is something you’ve always wanted to attend, but due to time, or budget constraints you’ve never been able to. 

 REASON 4:  You can play an important part in the Public Works community.  As a Committee member you will help form Congress and make your mark on this important event. Giving your time and energy to the Public Works community is worthwhile and rewarding.”.

 REASON 3:  You can see behind the scenes.  This may be your first Congress or your tenth, but you’ve never seen Congress from behind the scene.  Learn what goes on and what it takes to make this Congress shine.

 REASON 2:  It will be fun.  It’s a departure from your daily activities as a Public Works professional and gives you a chance to take on a different challenge.  The spirit of fun and excitement will carry through the planning process and into the Congress.

 REASON 1:  It is the ultimate networking opportunity.  You’re going to be working with hundreds of fellow local APWA members and meeting even more members from across the nation.  You never know what new friends, or potential future coworkers, you will meet throughout the Public Works community.

Since its initial meeting in June, the committee has met at least three times. Sub-committees formed are assigned to graphic design, media relations, finance committee, and outreach to public agencies, private firms, and trade organizations.

“Helping build attendance at the Congress and increasing awareness of the Conference is a primary aim of the committee, says Cora.  “To accomplish this, members will provide local media lists and contacts to APWA as well as on-site support in the press office,” she adds.   

Developing the Congress 2012 microsite is another objective. “The committee has agreed to use the Chicago Metro Congress 2013 site as a model,” notes Trish.  “A subcommittee is reviewing the site, identifying adaptable information and will make recommendations,” she adds.  Chapter members are encouraged to review the Chicago site as well and provide input.  Visit http://apwachicagometro2013.org/

            Coordinating the video promoting their city as the next Congress destination also is a responsibility of the committee.  The video includes local public works operations of interest to the general attendance and will be played during the Closing General Session on Wednesday to promote the next year’s Congress destination. 

            Interested local chapter members are urged to volunteer to serve on the Publicity Committee.  APWA membership is desired but not required. 

Conference call meetings are held each third Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m.  Call-in info and agenda are emailed in advance to Committee members.  Conference timeline of activities are discussed and members receive a copy of the timeline in advance of the meeting.
